How to write the summary

30 words is about two short sentences. That's room for the main point and two details.

  1. While you listen, note the main point and the key details.

  2. Write the main point in one short sentence.

  3. Add the two most important details.

  4. Count your words, and cut anything over 30.

  5. Check your spelling, full stops and capital letters.

Common mistakes

  • Writing too much

50 words is right for PTE Academic. In PTE Core, over 40 scores zero.
  • Missing the main point

Get the topic wrong and the summary scores zero.
  • Notes, not sentences

Bullet points or very short notes score zero for form.
  • Spelling mistakes

Two mistakes cost you a spelling mark.
  • Trying to write down every word

Common questions

How many words should a PTE Core spoken summary be?

20 to 30 words gets full marks for form. 5 to 19, or 31 to 40, gets one mark. Under 5 or over 40 scores zero.

How long do you get?

8 minutes to listen and write. The recording is 45 to 75 seconds, and it plays once.

How is it scored?

On content, form, grammar, vocabulary and spelling, each out of 2, so 10 points in all. It counts for listening and writing.

Is it the same as Summarize Spoken Text in PTE Academic?

No. In PTE Academic you write 50 to 70 words in 10 minutes. In PTE Core you write 20 to 30 words in 8 minutes. So practise the version for your test.

Can I take notes?

Yes. You get an erasable whiteboard. Write the main point and the key details while you listen.
