IELTS Reading, Part 1

Read the text and answer questions 1 to 13.

The town library

When the town library opened in 1890, it held 400 books and was open on two evenings a week. Most of its first readers were factory workers who had left school early.

Within ten years the collection had grown to over 3,000 books. A reading room for children was added in 1899, and the library began to open every day.

How to get more answers right

  1. About 20 minutes a passage

If one passage takes too long, move on and come back.
  2. Know False from Not Given

False means the passage says the opposite. Not Given means the passage doesn't say either way.
  3. Keep to the word limit

In gap-fill questions, use words from the passage. More words than the limit loses the mark.
  4. Answer every question

A blank can't get a mark. If you're not sure, choose your best answer.
