How to get a higher band

  1. Plan your hour

Spend about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 on Task 2, because Task 2 is worth more.
  2. Reach the word count

Write at least 150 words in Task 1 and at least 250 in Task 2. A short answer may not show enough for a high band.
  3. Give Task 1 an overview

Sum up the main trends or differences in one or two sentences. You need a clear overview for Band 7.
  4. Answer every part

Many Task 2 questions ask two things. Answer both, or your task response band stays low.

Common questions

Do I get feedback on my writing for free?

Yes, on your first test. You get a band for each of the four criteria and corrections on your own sentences. After that, marking is part of Pro.

How accurate is the band score?

It's an estimate, not an official band. Our engine marks each criterion against the public IELTS band descriptors. Use it to find what to fix next.

Can I practise only Task 1 or only Task 2?

Yes. There are over 60 Task 1 questions and over 80 Task 2 essay questions that you can write one at a time. Each task has its own page here, with a structure to follow.

Can I see Band 9 versions of my two tasks?

Yes, with Pro. Our engine will rewrite your Task 1 and Task 2 answers to get Band 9, so you can compare them with yours line by line.
