What PTE Core is

For moving to Canada

Canada's immigration department, IRCC, accepts it for permanent residence and citizenship. You can also use it for your work permit after you graduate.

Everyday English

It uses the English you need at work and in daily life, such as emails and notices. There are no university lectures.

Up to 2 hours

You take three parts in one sitting: speaking and writing first, then reading, then listening.

Test format

The test has 19 question types in three parts. Write Email is the only one you won't find in PTE Academic.

PTE Core scores and CLB levels

You get a score from 10 to 90 for each skill, plus an overall score. Canada turns each skill score into a CLB level and ignores the overall score.

Speaking and writing usually need higher scores than listening and reading for the same level. Here are Pearson's scores for each level.

What is PTE Core?

It's Pearson's English test for moving to Canada. IRCC, Canada's immigration department, accepts it for permanent residence, citizenship and the post-graduation work permit. The test uses everyday English and takes up to 2 hours.

What PTE Core score do I need for Express Entry?

It depends on the program. Federal Skilled Worker needs CLB 7 in all four skills, which on PTE Core means listening 60, reading 60, speaking 68 and writing 69.

Is PTE Core the same as PTE Academic?

No. PTE Core is for Canada and uses everyday English. It has 19 question types, including Write Email. PTE Academic is for university study and for visas to Australia and New Zealand, and it has 22 question types.

How is PTE Core scored?

A computer scores every answer. You get a score from 10 to 90 for each skill, plus an overall score. Canada turns each skill score into a CLB level and ignores the overall score.

Does Leap Exam show my CLB level?

Yes. You see the CLB level next to each skill score, on your home page and on every mock test report. The overall score has no CLB level, so we don't show one.

Is PTE Core practice on Leap Exam free?

Yes, to start. All you need is your email, and there's no card to enter. Many questions are free, and so is your first feedback on the tasks our engine marks, such as Write Email. Pro opens every question and mock test, and it covers PTE Academic and IELTS too.
