The same IELTS band needs a different PTE score in each skill. For example, IELTS 7.0 is 58 in listening and 59 in reading, but 76 in speaking and 69 in writing. Some rows in the table show a visa level. On those rows, the first number for each skill is the minimum PTE score Home Affairs needs for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025.

The numbers come from Pearson's July 2025 study of 1,522 people who took both tests within 90 days.

What is IELTS 7 in PTE?

IELTS 7 is PTE 63 to 70 overall. For each skill, it is 58 to 63 in listening, 59 to 64 in reading, 76 to 82 in speaking and 69 to 76 in writing. These ranges come from Pearson's 2025 study.

What is PTE 65 in IELTS?

PTE 65 overall is IELTS 7.0. But for an Australian visa, Home Affairs checks each skill separately. For Proficient English, you need 58 in listening, 59 in reading, 76 in speaking and 69 in writing, all in one test taken on or after 7 August 2025.

How much is PTE 52 in IELTS?

PTE 52 overall is IELTS 6.0. IELTS 6.0 covers PTE 47 to 54, so you need 55 to reach IELTS 6.5.

What is IELTS 6.5 in PTE?

IELTS 6.5 is PTE 55 to 62 overall. Many master's degrees ask for IELTS 6.5, but many universities also set their own PTE score. Check the page for your course.

What does PTE 79 mean in IELTS?

PTE 79 overall is IELTS 8.0. For a visa, Superior English now needs 69 in listening, 70 in reading, 88 in speaking and 85 in writing, in one test taken on or after 7 August 2025.

What PTE score do I need for migration points?

Proficient English gives you 10 points, and Superior English gives you 20. For a test taken on or after 7 August 2025, Proficient needs 58 in listening, 59 in reading, 76 in speaking and 69 in writing. Superior needs 69 in listening, 70 in reading, 88 in speaking and 85 in writing. All four scores must come from one test. If you took the test before that date, the old rule applies: 65 in every skill for Proficient and 79 for Superior.

How accurate is a PTE to IELTS conversion?

It is a good guide. Pearson's 2025 study compared the scores of 1,522 people who took both tests within 90 days. The results are most reliable between IELTS 5.5 and 8.0. Pearson says every conversion is approximate, so a timed PTE practice test will tell you more.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?

Neither test is easier for everyone. In PTE, a computer scores you, and it rewards clear pronunciation and speaking at a steady pace. In IELTS, you speak with a real examiner. Take a timed practice test of each and compare your results.
