How to write the summary

Give the main point, then the key details. One sentence or two both work.

  1. Read the text and find the main point.

  2. Note two or three key details in a few words.

  3. Write the main point in your own words.

  4. Add the key details, in the same sentence or a new one.

  5. Start each sentence with a capital letter and end it with a full stop.

  6. Check you have 25 to 50 words.

Common mistakes

  • Writing too much

A PTE Academic summary can go to 75 words. In PTE Core, over 60 scores zero.
  • Missing the main point

Get the topic wrong and the summary scores zero.
  • Copying long parts of the text

  • No full stops

No punctuation, or all capitals, scores zero for form.
  • Bullet points

Write full sentences. A list scores zero for form.

25 to 50 words gets full marks for form. 5 to 24, or 51 to 60, gets one mark. Under 5 or over 60 scores zero.

Yes. In PTE Core you can write one or more full sentences. In PTE Academic, the summary must be one sentence.

10 minutes for each text. A test has 1 or 2 texts, each up to 200 words.
